✨ Proclamation and Appointments

and the "Wairau District," the boundaries whereof respectively were therein set forth, which said Proclamation
came into operation and took effect on
the first day of October, one thousand
eight hundred and fifty-nine; and
whereas it is expedient to revoke so
much of the said Proclamation as relates to the said two Districts, and to
divide anew the territory formerly comprised within such Districts:
Now, therefore, I, Sir George Grey,
the Governor of the said Colony, in pursuance and exercise of the power and
authority vested in me by the said recited Act, do hereby revoke the said
Proclamation so far as relates to the
"Nelson District" and the "Wairau
District," and do proclaim and declare
that the territory formerly comprised
within such Districts shall be and is
hereby divided for the purposes of the
said Act into three Districts, the names
and boundaries whereof shall be as follows:
NELSON DISTRICT.
From the sea at the North-east angle
of the Waimea Road District, following the Southern boundary of the last
named District till it meets the straight
line from the summit of Mount Arthur
to the junction of the Buller and Gowan;
thence along that line to the mouth of
the Gowan; thence up the Gowan to
Lake Howick, along the Western shore
of Lake Howick to its Southern extremity; thence to the Wairau Gorge;
thence Northerly to Lake Arthur along
its Eastern margin to the stream running
into it from the North-east; thence up
the said stream to the head of the Motupiko river; thence along watershed
summits to Mount Rintoul; and thence
along the boundary of the Province of
Nelson to Tennyson’s Inlet.
PICTON DISTRICT.
Bounded on the North and East by
the coast line from the North-west corner of the Province of Marlborough at
Tennyson’s Inlet to the East end of the
range of hills dividing White’s Bay
from Robin Hood’s Bay; thence on the
South by a right line to a point in the
Tua Marina Valley, five miles due
North from the mouth of Tua Marina
river; thence by a right line to a point
in the Kaituna Valley, seven miles from
the Wairau river; thence up a line to
the summit of the range of hills dividing the Pelorus and Wairau rivers;
hence by a line along the said summit
to Mount Richmond; thence on the
West and Northwest by a right line to
the Red Hills; and thence by the
North-western boundary of the Province
of Marlborough to Tennyson’s Inlet.
WAIRAU DISTRICT.
Bounded by the Southern boundary
of Picton District from the range of
hills dividing White’s Bay from Robin
Hood’s Bay to Mount Richmond;
thence by a line running Northerly to
the Red Hills; thence by the Eastern
boundary of the Nelson District to the
Wairau Gorge; thence to the summit
of the watershed between the Gorge
and Barefell’s Pass; thence to summit
of Mount Stafford; thence along
the watershed to Mount Wells; thence
along the watershed to the White
Bluff; thence by the sea coast to the
said range of hills dividing White’s
Bay from Robin Hood’s Bay.
And I do declare that this Proclamation shall come into operation and take
effect on the First day of April, one
thousand eight hundred and sixty-two.
Given under my hand at the Government House, at Auckland, and issued under the Seal of the
Colony of New Zealand, this
twenty-second day of January,
in the year of our Lord One
thousand eight hundred and
sixty-two.

- The Public Gaol of the City of Christchurch
- The Public Gaol of the Town of Dunedin
- The Public Gaol of the Town of Invercargill
to be places for the execution of Criminals,
under the "Execution of Criminals’ Act,
1858."
