✨ Proclamation on Registration Districts
A PROCLAMATION
Appointing certain Districts under the Registration Act.
By His Excellency Sir George Grey,
Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath,
Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over Her Majesty’s Colony of New Zealand, and its Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral of the same, &c., &c., &c.
WHEREAS by the “Registration Act, 1858,” it is enacted that it shall be lawful for the Governor at any time, by Proclamation in the New Zealand Gazette, to divide the Colony of New Zealand for the purposes of the said Act into such and so many Districts as he may think fit, and that every such District shall be called by a distinct name, and shall be a Registrar’s District, and it is provided that the Governor may at any time revoke the whole or any part of such Proclamation, and issue a new Proclamation dividing the Colony or any part of it anew into Districts, or increasing the number, or altering the boundaries of Districts as from time to time he may think requisite;
And whereas by a Proclamation duly made and issued, bearing date the sixth day of July, one thousand eight hundred and fifty-nine, the Governor, in pursuance of the said recited power and authority, did amongst others constitute two Districts for the purposes of the said Act called the “Nelson District,”
And whereas it is deemed expedient to divide the said District:
Now therefore, I do proclaim and declare that the territory formerly comprised within such Districts shall be and is hereby divided for the purposes of the said Act into three Districts, the names and boundaries whereof shall be as follows:—
NELSON DISTRICT.
From the sea at the North-east angle of the Waimea Road District following the Southern boundary of the last named District till it meets the straight line from summit of Mount Arthur to the junction of the Buller and Gowan; thence along that line to the mouth of the Gowan, thence up the Gowan to Lake Howick along the Western shore of Lake Howick, to its Southern extremity; thence to the Wairau Gorge, thence Northerly to Lake Arthur along its Eastern margin to the stream running into it from the North-east; thence up the said stream to the head of the Motupiko river; thence along water summits to Mount Rintoul, and thence along the boundary of the Province of Nelson to Tennyson’s Inlet.
PICTON DISTRICT.
Bounded on the North and East by the coast line from the North-west corner of the Province of Marlborough at Tennyson’s Inlet to the East end of the range of hills dividing White’s Bay from Robin Hood’s Bay; thence on the South by a right line to a point in the Tua Marina Valley, five miles due North from the mouth of the Tua Marina River; thence by a right line to a point in the Kaituna Valley, seven miles from the Wairau River; thence by a line to the summit of the range of hills dividing the Pelorus and Wairau rivers; thence by a line along the said summit to Mount Richmond; thence on the West and North-west by a right line to the Red Hills, and thence by the North-western boundary of the Province of Marlborough to Tennyson’s Inlet.
WAIRAU DISTRICT.
Bounded by the Southern boundary of Picton District from the range of hills dividing White’s Bay from Robin Hood’s Bay to Mount Richmond; thence by a line running Northerly to the Red Hills; thence by the Eastern boundary of the Nelson District to the Wairau Gorge; thence to the summit of the watershed between the Gorge and Barefell’s Pass; thence to the summit of Mount Stafford; thence along the watershed to Mount Wells; thence along the watershed to the White Bluff; thence by the sea coast to the said range of hills dividing White’s Bay from Robin Hood’s Bay.
And I do declare that this Proclamation shall come into operation and take effect on the First day of April, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-two.
Given under my hand at the Government House at Auckland, and issued under the Seal of the Colony of New Zealand, this twenty-second day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-two.
G. Grey.
By His Excellency’s command,
William Fox.
GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!
