REGULATIONS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF SCHOOLS.

Schools shall in future be examined according to the Standards hereinafter prescribed.

All children in fair attendance will be expected to pass one Standard in each year; but examinations shall be held every half year (as far as practicable), and any child may be presented for examination in any Standard though he may have passed a lower Standard only six months before.

No child shall be re-examined in any Standard which he has already passed.

Every child transferred from one school to another shall be furnished with a certificate from the school he leaves, showing what Standard he last passed.

Subjects not included in the Standards may be taught at the discretion of the teachers, subject to the control of the District Committees; and the Inspectors may examine in such extra subjects when they conduct the ordinary examination according to the Standards.

In all cases the children presented for examination in any Standard must be prepared to exhibit proficiency in the work also of the lower Standards.

An annual return shall be made by the Inspectors, showing with respect to each school the number of children who have been presented in each Standard during the year and the number who have passed in each.

The following are the Standards :-
READING AND SPELLING.
I.—Sentences composed of words of not more than one syllable, to be read intelligently. Spelling—one syllable.
II.—Sentences containing easy words of two syllables. Spelling—two syllables.
III.—Child’s easy reading book (as Nelson’s third book). Spelling from the same reading book.
IV.—An easy book of prose (narrative and dialogue) and verse. Spelling and dictation suited to this stage, represented by the reading book of this standard.
V.—A book of general information, not necessarily excluding matter such as that prescribed for standard IV. Spelling and dictation suited to this stage.
VI.—A book containing extracts from general literature. Spelling and dictation suited as before.
WRITING.
I.—Short letters (i. e., letters not extending above or below the line of writing), and the ten figures—on slate.
II.—Short words in copy book.
III.—Large and text hand (as in Darnell’s books, I to VI). Writing on slates from reading book of Standard III.
