SCHOOL FURNITURE.

BESIDES the ordinary apparatus obtainable at the Depôt, the school furniture should consist of :—

A large Book-cupboard.
A Writing-table for the Master.

A Chair to each table.
Three sets of Desks, three in each set, with forms to suit the desks.

The Book-cupboard should be six feet high, the level top serving as a convenient pedestal for globes, &c.; it should be four feet wide, with a lower and an upper cupboard, each in two compartments; the lower part three feet high, and projecting six inches, should be twenty inches deep, with one movable shelf in each compartment; the upper part fourteen inches deep, with two movable shelves in each compartment; the cupboard secured by lock and key.

The two tables should be uniform, each about three feet by two feet, of the usual height, with two drawers in each table, with lock and key, but no projecting handles.

The chairs, arm-chairs, strongly made.

The Desks.—Three desks make one set or class. There will, except in large schools, be three sets or classes, in all nine desks.

The desks of the same set or class must be of equal lengths. Generally, all in the same room are of the same length; but it is not absolutely necessary, although it looks more uniform; but they should be made of lengths to suit the room, or space is lost.

The smallest length for small schools is six feet; the largest length is twelve feet; the lengths are 6 feet, 7 1/2 feet, 9 feet, 10 1/2 feet, and 12 feet.

Eighteen inches is the minimum length of desk-room per child; hence a desk six feet long will take four children; seven and a-half feet five children, and so on.

The alleys for passage between the desks are also eighteen inches each, at the least.
