Akaroa ... ... ... Dec. 6 ... Present 37 ... The school is improving; but at present rather deficient as to fluency and accuracy.

Duvauchelle’s Bay ... ... Dec. 6 ... Inspected only ... Present 38, in good order; two members of the committee attended and pointed out the proposed site, near the present school, as suitable a site as can be had.

Robinson’s Bay ... ... Dec. 6 ... Inspected and partially examined.

Okain’s Bay ... ... Dec. 7 ... Present 33 ... Very satisfactory.

St. Luke’s Girls’ School ... Dec. 12 ... Inspected the building. It is not well adapted for the purpose of a school. The dimensions are about 32 by 18, with one corner cut off. The room is formed by sub-dividing the building, by a movable screen, into separate rooms for boys and girls; and the corner taken off the girls’ room is added to the boys’ for an egress to the porch; the partition at this corner is only as high as the wall plate, but open above, allowing a free passage for noise to either room, and for draft diagonally across the girls’ room to their entrance at the opposite corner. The partition does not fit very well, allowing several openings for seeing, hearing, and draft. The ventilation is otherwise defective. The room is dark and cold, lighted by windows at each end, and imperfectly warmed by a fire-place at one end.

St. Luke’s Boys’ School ... Inspected Dec. 12 ... Present 67 ... In excellent order; the register was, however, in arrear as the information to be brought forward and as to the results of attendance. Occasional supervision by the Committee is desirable.

Addington ... ... ... Dec. 12 ... Present 43, on roll 57, average attendance about 31; highest average 41; attendance increasing. This school was, when last reported on, at a very low ebb; it has, since that time, made a very satisfactory improvement. Local interest has been awakened; the children have been removed to a large and suitable room; and the teaching is much more efficient.

Halswell ... ... ... Dec. 13 ... Present 31 ... The general efficiency and the progress are very creditable. Here, as in other country districts, there is little if any control over the late and unpunctual attendance.

Templeton ... ... ... Dec. 14 ... Present 82 ... Satisfactory. The building has been shaken by severe gales.

Riccarton ... ... ... Dec. 15 ... Present 63 ... The superior efficiency of this school is highly commendable. Not only is the range of study above the average; but also the degree of accuracy and the exquisite neatness of the work are remarkable.

Hororata ... ... ... Dec. 19 ... Present 26 ... Satisfactory.

Kowai Pass ... ... ... Dec. 21 ... Present 30 ... Highly commendable.

Courtenay ... ... ... Dec. 22 ... Present 16, on roll 22, average daily attendance about 14. The attendance falls off; the upper classes make satisfactory progress, the lower get on slowly.
