✨ School Inspection Reports
xxxviii.
Governor’s Bay North ... Dec. 5 ... Present 11 ... The school, built with the view of forming a superior day and boarding school, has not answered the expectations of its promoters. The small attendance scarcely warrants the expenditure of Government grant. The boys have fallen off in the neatness of their personal appearance; the attainments were, on the whole, satisfactory; map-drawing very creditable.
Governor’s Bay ... Dec. 5 ... Present 9 ... The children of only four families attend the school; it is maintained at a comparatively small cost to the Government, the heads of families contributing largely. The teaching has always been superior as to method and efficiency; the attainments and general knowledge are above the average of country schools.
Lyttelton Wesleyan School ... Dec. 6 ... Present 62 ... The attainments are fairly proportioned to the age of the children, a lower average age than that of the neighbouring schools; the proficiency of the small first-class of a few elder children is satisfactory. The general accuracy of the lower classes and the fluency of the reading throughout the school are especially commendable.
Lyttelton Church of England School ... Same day ... Present 47.
Lyttelton High School ... Same day ... Present 70, making in all 179 present the same day in these three schools. The two schools above mentioned, and casually visited, appeared to be in good working order.
Akaroa School ... Dec. 7 ... Present 23 ... The bulk of the former attendance had left, and many of the attendants are said to have gone to private schools before the present master entered upon his duties; only one-fourth of the present number were on last quarter’s list; the school may be said to be recommencing satisfactorily. A larger attendance list is expected next quarter.
Little Akaloa ... Dec. 8 ... Present 26 ... The progress since last examination is very satisfactory.
Okain Bay ... Dec. 9 ... Present 39 ... Satisfactory.
Duvauchelle’s Bay ... The Local Committee having had a certified teacher sanctioned by the Board, decline, for local reasons, re-opening the school until January.
Pigeon Bay School ... Dec. 10 ... Present 33 ... The numbers and efficiency of the school are increasing; although the standard of attainment is at present inferior to that of other schools on the Peninsula.
Kaiapoi Church of England ... Dec. 12 ... Present 84 ... Satisfactory.
Eyreton School ... Dec. 18 ... Present 35 ... The numbers have considerably increased for the present quarter; they will probably fall off again during harvest; the progress of the constant attendants is very satisfactory.
Rangiora (Boys) ... Dec. 14 ... Present 61 ... Satisfactory.
