✨ Education Inspection Reports
xxxvii.
Stoke School ... November 18 ... Visited in passing; opened on November 8th. There are already 82 names enrolled, and an average daily attendance of 25. The buildings appear to be unsatisfactory; built and lined with green wood, the boards have already warped and shrunk considerably. The desks, similarly, are badly made, and of unsuitable lengths. The attendance should be entered in the register at least twice daily, i.e. every morning and afternoon.
Three candidates for Masterships having been examined, one of them, T. Ross, has obtained a certificate of fitness for the Mastership of the Duvauchelle’s Bay School.
I have the honour to be, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
J. P. RESTELL,
Inspector of Schools.
BOARD OF EDUCATION.
(NOVEMBER 25—DECEMBER 29, 1870.)
INSPECTOR’S MONTHLY REPORT.
TO THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD.
SIR,
I have the honour to submit a Summary Report on the Schools Examined.
Riccarton ... Nov. 25 ... Present 69 ... The efficiency is highly commendable; good discipline, steady progress, great neatness and considerable accuracy characterise the school.
Saltwater Creek ... Nov. 28 ... Present 18 ... The neatness is creditable; the attainments, moderate.
Leithfield ... Nov. 30 ... Present 14 ... A very wet morning; the attainments of those present were creditable. The school can be examined again early in January if the committee desire it.
Loburn ... Dec. 1 ... Present 28 ... The progress of the school, during the two years since its commencement, is very creditable.
Ashley Bank ... Dec. 2 ... Present 37 ... The attendance, for some time previously very low, has only recently increased; the attainments are consequently very low; it is highly desirable that a standard of efficiency, similar to that of most other schools in the Northern District, should be attained.
Mount Grey Downs ... Dec. 2 ... Present 19 ... The Bible knowledge is very deficient; the other attainments are very creditable, and above the average—that is, there is greater proficiency and accuracy in the ordinary subjects of instruction.
