✨ School Inspection Reports

xxxvi.

Committee was present throughout the examination; several suggestions for improvement were made at the time. A clock, a larger black board, and an easel are necessary. A summary register (should be used in all the schools now), and an improved time-table are desirable. The method is defective; the subjects of instruction are not well balanced; below the first class the elementary knowledge is very deficient; yet, on the whole, there is considerable improvement since last examination.

Broadfield ... July 14 ... Present 38 ... The school was not quite up to its usually good order; but this may be partly accounted for by the very recent removal into the new schoolroom. Better desks will be wanted. A good supply of books and apparatus has been obtained. The attainments are very creditable; the general accuracy above the average of the schools in the surrounding districts.

North Road ... July 18 ... Present 10 ... New master; satisfactory, except as to the very small attendance.

Lyttelton Church of England School ... July 20 ... Present 44 ... The school appears to be recommencing satisfactorily under the new master and mistress. A new stock of desks and forms of proper heights and dimensions would conduce to improve the organization; better order would be secured by the teachers standing less near to each child, and by keeping the whole school in front of them, and under constant vigilance.

Papanui Wesleyan School ... July 21 ... Present 17 ... The attendance has fallen off considerably, owing to the sweeping changes of the new master, who has recommenced almost every subject de novo. If a constant and lengthened attendance could be relied on, the plan would be less injudicious; with greater tact the results aimed at might have been more nearly effected, and without the present injury to the school. Great pains have been taken in the instruction of the remnant, the fluency and expression acquired in the easy reading lessons is very commendable. The present standard of attainment is, however, ridiculously low, a very different one should be shown by the next examination.

I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your obedient servant,

J. P. RESTELL,
Inspector of Schools.
