BOARD OF EDUCATION.
(JULY 29—AUGUST 25, 1870.)
INSPECTOR’S MONTHLY REPORT.
To THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD.
SIR,
I have the honour to submit a Report on the Schools Examined during the month.
Riccarton School ... July 29 ... Present 55 ... Very creditable.
There is, however, at present, and inevitably, too much monitorial teaching; monitors have neither the aptitude to observe, nor the persistency to correct, ordinary mistakes. Habitual inaccuracy consequently results from monitorial teaching. A pupil-teacher, under the training of the present master, would supply what is requisite.
Akaroa School ... Aug. 1 ... Present 17 ...
The attendance was reduced by the master’s absence on leave; it has latterly fallen off. The young person in temporary charge of the school was scarcely equal to the responsibility. The attendance register was incomplete. The few children present included those most regular in attendance. Their attainments were creditable; one boy in particular, Walter Parsons, had made remarkable progress.
Duvauchelle’s Bay School ... Aug. 1 ... Special Visit ... Present 14.
The stoppage of the principal sawmills, the wintry weather, and the landslips, are among the causes which reduce the attendance. The examination was entirely unexpected, being without any intimation, and quite unusual in the depth of winter. It is, therefore, very improbable that only the best scholars were present. The discipline and attainments were, in most points, highly creditable, superior to the other schools visited on the Peninsula on this occasion. The children are kindly treated, and carefully taught; the few remaining attendants have gained by the greater share of time allowed for each. The master holds an English Government certificate, and is one of the most skilful teachers in Canterbury. The committee, however, appear to be desirous of a change; in that event, and if the services of both a competent master and mistress could be secured, it is highly probable that the efficiency of the school would be increased.
Pigeon Bay School ... Aug. 2 ... Present 22 ... Improving.
Saltwater Creek ... Aug. 9 ... Present 27 ... Very short of material; committee have no funds; residents object to the proposed rate. The attainments were very creditable, with the exception that the Bible knowledge of the lower classes has been totally neglected.
Mount Grey Downs ... Aug. 9 ... Present 22 ...
A large ventilator in the gable end does not close; the cold air pours in all the winter.
