RESULT OF CONFERENCE WITH LOCAL COMMITTEE, SALTWATER CREEK.
In accordance with the instructions of the Board your Inspector conferred with the Local Committee of the Saltwater Creek District, on the 21st inst., as to their unanimity respecting the “enquiry” of their Chairman, whether the Board would sanction the dismissal of the schoolmaster.
The whole Committee, consisting, however, of only four members, were present—viz., Messrs. White (the chairman), Wilson, Hopkins, and Lawrence.
The letter of the Chairman, enquiring whether the Board would sanction the dismissal of the master, did not appear to have resulted from any minute of the Committee; until this evening the members were quite unaware that such a letter had been written to the Board.
Each member of the Committee expressed his opinion that the dismissal of the master after the first serious complaint, without allowing time for improvement, would be a harsh proceeding.
With reference to the instance of John Cameron, whose guardians were stated by the Chairman of the Local Committee to be removing him from school on account of their dissatisfaction, Mr. Hopkins stated to the meeting that Mr. Cameron’s chief reasons for sending the boy to a boarding-school were, both to effect his more regular attendance than while living at home at the hotel, and, also, to remove a boy of that age from the associations and influence of public-house life. It is their intention, however, to continue the boy’s sister, Annie Cameron, at the Saltwater Creek School during the winter.
Mr. Hopkins expressed himself as well satisfied with the progress of his own little boy.
Mr. Wilson was dissatisfied with the progress of his boys, but admitted that they had been irregular; he stated, also, that Messrs. Barclay, Cairns and Duff agree with himself, that the master brings on the younger children very well up to a certain point, beyond
