Student Progress Reports

xvi.

French: — Atack has a better knowledge of the language than the other boys; his oral construing was fluent and correct. Wilkinson and Dawson are construing very lamely—these two have a very imperfect knowledge of the nouns and adjectives; and they are all three very ignorant of the verbs. The construing, therefore, must mainly be a rote acquirement.

Latin: — Atack’s grammar and parsing are good; his construing of Horace is creditable for a boy of his age; but he is not equal to what has been set down in the programme of work gone over. Wilkinson’s grammar and parsing are unequal to his construing. Dawson’s attempts at construing are not more absurd than that of teaching it to a boy having so slight a knowledge of the rudiments.

Greek: — Atack. "Grammar to the end of the regular verbs;" "Xenophon, Anabasis, Book I., pp. 10;" "Homer, Book I., line 58." The grammar is imperfect in the declensions of nouns, pronouns and adjectives; the knowledge of the regular verbs is confined to the first conjugation. Scarcely any attention has been paid to the accents. The construing of Xenophon is imperfect; of Homer has been discontinued.

In both Latin and Greek, exercises in the construction of sentences, and in simple, prose compositions should have, at least, accompanied, if not preceded the construing.
