Education Inspector Reports

Tai Tapu ... April 26 ... Present 34 ... The size of the room is inadequate to the attendance, the greatest number present on any day this quarter having been 39. The attainments were generally satisfactory.

William Souter, candidate for the Mastership of the Governor’s Bay North School, and James Leete, for that of an Ordinary School, were examined on the 25th instant, and obtained certificates of fitness.

I have the honour to be, Sir,

Your obedient servant,

J. P. RESTELL,
Inspector of Schools.

BOARD OF EDUCATION.

(APRIL 29—MAY 26, 1870.)

INSPECTOR’S MONTHLY REPORT.

TO THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD.

SIR,

I have the honour to submit a Summary Report on the Schools Examined during the month.

Papanui Wesleyan School ... April 29 ... Present 26 ... New Teacher; school improving, but not enough books. A change in the arrangement of the desks is desirable; at present they face the wall, close against it, the children having their backs to the teacher.

Cust School ... May 3 ... Present 25 ... Improving.

Harewood School ... May 4 ... Present 40 ... Satisfactory, except as to the imperfect knowledge of Sacred History, and the number of children not writing for want of copybooks.

Oxford School ... May 4 ... Present 36 ... The very moderate attainments are attributable to the interruption of the school on account of the serious illness of the master. He is now employing an assistant to relieve him during the winter months. The supply of reading books was deficient.

Eyretton School ... May 5 ... Present 21 ... The progress of the children reflects great credit upon the diligence and assiduity of the teacher.

Flaxton School ... May 5 ... Present 23 ... Order, good; progress, creditable.

Kainga Wesleyan School ... May 6 ... Present 69 ... The progress is for the most part very creditable.
