✨ School Inspection Reports
Lesson ... April 14 ... Present 16 ... Satisfactory.
Southbridge ... April 14 ... Present 20 ... Satisfactory.
North Road (Papanui)
... April 19 ... Present 23 ... The standard of
attainment has considerably improved. The school has been very carefully and
so far successfully taught.
Woodend
... April 19 ... Present 48 ... The school is
carefully conducted by efficient teachers, a master and mistress. The attendance
is affected by the harvest, but a large proportion have attended regularly and
made very satisfactory progress. The fidelity and energy of the teachers are
exemplary.
North Kowai
... April 20 ... Present 22 ... Satisfactory. The
Bible knowledge good. The standard of attainment in secular knowledge is, as
yet, low, this being a new school; but the writing is very carefully taught, and
errors of diction are less prevalent than in many schools.
Leithfield
... April 20 ... Present 23 ... There is a great
want of life and energy in the teaching of the school; some subjects were satisfactory, others much less so; the reading in the middle classes was lame; the
writing has not been judiciously taught; the copybooks were ill chosen; and the
copies set, not at all adapted to the capability of the children.
Saltwater Creek
... April 21 ... Present 25 ... The attendance
having been very irregular, the attainments are far from satisfactory; much
greater accuracy in elementary knowledge used to characterise the school. The
discipline, not very good, has mostly been compensated by the fatherly kindness
of the master, one of the oldest in Canterbury, and by the children’s attachment
to him.
Mount Grey Downs
... April 21 ... Present 19 ... There is no
proper attendance register; Bibles and maps are wanted; the Bible knowledge
is deficient; the other subjects satisfactory, considering that the new teacher has
not been long in office.
Ashley Bank
... April 21 ... Present 12 ... Sickness prevents
several children from attending. The standard of attainment is very elementary,
with the exception of that of William Dixon, who works alone at a disadvantage;
he requires promotion to a good boarding school, or one of the “Superior
Schools.”
Loburn
... April 21 ... Present 26 ... Very creditable.
At the former examination of this school, in the presence of the Committee, the
performances of his pupils did not at all equal the expectations of their teacher;
he has used great and successful exertions to effect a higher standard of attainment; and the excellent order of the school has conduced to the satisfactory
result.
Lincoln School
... April 26 ... Present 18 ... The stove stands
out in the room among the desks, partly closing one of the alleys. The school is
still without a Map of New Zealand. The children, in good order, are making
fair progress, except that they cannot learn the Geography of New Zealand
without a map.
