✨ Education Inspector's Monthly Report

BOARD OF EDUCATION.

(April 1β€”28, 1870.)

INSPECTOR’S MONTHLY REPORT.

To the Chairman of the Board.

Sir,

I have the honour to submit a Summary Report on the Schools Examined during the month.

Harewood Road School (Papanui) ... April 5 ... Present 19 ... Satisfactory.

Courtenay ... April 6 ... Present 20 ... Satisfactory.

Hororata ... April 7 ... Present 17 ... New school.

The site is a good selection. The buildings are suitable, and well built. The premises are unfenced. There is at present no stove in the schoolroom; but I believe it is the intention to have one fitted up shortly. Maps, a larger black board, an easel, other apparatus and exercise books will be requisite, before the school has its complement, but they are not in immediate request. The school is in good order, except that the desks and seats have been arranged more with a view to the Sunday services than to school usage. The examination, being the first one of this school, was preliminary. The care and pains taken by the teacher give fair hope of successful results.

South Selwyn ... April 8 ... Present 24 ... The protracted harvest has hindered the progress of the school; allowing for this and other drawbacks, the progress is satisfactory.

Templeton ... April 12 ... Present 19 ... The week having begun wet has affected the attendance here and at the other schools examined during the remainder of the week. The knowledge of Arithmetic is very deficient.

Prebbleton ... April 12 ... Present 23 ... The school in the new building has commenced. The stove stands an obstruction in the midst of the room; further back a few feet nearer the long wall would be a better position. A clock, a table, a larger black board, and an easel are requisite. The routine of daily lessons should be conducted in strict accordance with a suitable time-table.

Springston ... April 13 ... Present 23 ... The reading is very backward, far behind that of children of the same age in similar schools. Greater importance should be attached, and more time and attention paid to it. Other subjects were very creditable.

Broadfield School ... April 13 ... Present 18 ... Good order is cheerfully kept up. The standard of attainment would excel that of the surrounding schools, if there were a better knowledge of Sacred History.
