Public Scholarships Examination Notice




The Scholarships to be four in number, of the value of £40 each for one year, unless further appropriations are made by the Provincial Council.

The Scholarships will be open to all boys resident in the Province below eleven years of age.

The proceeds of the Scholarships will be available only as a contribution towards the expenses of tuition, board, lodging, and other school expenses, at some school to be approved of by the Board.

In cases where the successful candidates desire it, the Board will provide, in lieu of the above sum of £40, board, lodging, tuition, and washing free of cost for one year from the date of examination, at some school to be fixed by the Board.

Those desiring to compete must report themselves as candidates in writing to the Chairman of the Board on or before the 22nd January, 1870, stating their age and the school at which they attend. In case they attend no school their residence must be named.

Such candidates will be required to undergo a preliminary examination, with the view of ascertaining how far they are qualified to compete.

The names of those who pass the preliminary examination will be entered on a list as the candidates to be examined for Scholarships.

The examinations will take place at convenient central places to be determined by the Board, and the candidates will be conveyed to and from such central places, free of charge.

Those boys will be considered under eleven years of age who complete their eleventh year on or after the aforesaid 15th March.

The Board reserves to itself the right of requiring proof as to the age of any candidate.

The subjects upon which candidates will be examined are as follows:—

Reading and Spelling

Writing, large text and small hand

Arithmetic, as far as compound rules and reduction

English Grammar

English Composition

History, sacred and profane

Geography.

The Scholarships gained during the years 1866, 1867, and 1868, will be continued to the present holders until the 30th September, 1870, subject to the condition that the Board shall be satisfied with the progress they have made in their studies.
