✨ School Inspection Reports
XXXIII.
Kalapoi Wesleyan School. December 18 ... Present, 51 ... Improving.
Geraldine School,
... December 21 ... Present, 6, and five others who arrived
at a quarter to eleven. School begins at 10 a.m. The long distances, and the
dairy work are the excuse for beginning so late. On the other hand, the children
living near have a long idle morning before School. The attendance account is not
properly kept, only on slips afterwards copied into the register. These slips
are made up for once instead of for twice a day, and sometimes from memory.
Every child is represented to have attended a full five days per week. There was
no attendance account for the School-day previous to the examination. The
attainments, except the arithmetic, were fairly proportioned to the time in School.
Of the five children arriving after the inspection, two of 5 or 6 years old live one
mile from the School; one of 8 years, three-quarters of a mile; two of 7 or 8,
four miles. As to apparatus: The black board was useless for want of chalk,
slate pencils were sent for to the store.
Arrowtown School,
... same day ... Present 31 ... School begins at ten, and
some of the children probably come later; the late hour is much more objectionable
than at Geraldine, for most of the children live in the township. Every
class was short of books, and the reading consequently very imperfect; the
improvement in other subjects since last examination is very slight, and not commendable.
The Master complains of arrears of fees of above £60; this is the
result of a higher rate of fees than the residents can afford and of their being
paid in arrear. A low quarterly pre-payment would have secured a larger
attendance and a more real income.
Timaru School,
... Dec. 22 ... Present 75 ... Satisfactory.
Waimate School,
... Dec. 28 ... Present 42 ... The Bible knowledge
was very deficient, the other subjects showed some improvement since last
examination.
The details of each examination are entered in the Journal.
I have the honour to be, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
J. P. RESTELL,
Inspector of Schools.
