BOARD OF EDUCATION.

(MARCH 27—APRIL 30, 1868.)

INSPECTOR’S SUMMARY REPORT FOR THE MONTH.

TO THE HON. H. J. TANCRED, CHAIRMAN.

SIR,—I have the honour, in obedience to your instructions, to submit a Summary Report on the Schools and Candidates examined during the month.

Sixteen Schools, including 422 children, and six Candidates for appointments as Teachers, have been examined.

OF THE SCHOOLS EXAMINED :—

Harewood Road School .... March 27 .... Present, 16 .... The ventilation insufficient. The attendance has not recovered since the harvest.

Halswell School .... April 1 .... Present, 34 .... Improved in most of the subjects of complaint last quarter, except that the lower classes still read badly, although they spell well from memory.

Lincoln .... April 2 .... Present, 25 .... Satisfactory.

Tai Tapu .... Same day .... Present, 31 .... Satisfactory.

Governor’s Bay .... April 3 .... Present, 9 .... Satisfactory.

Governor’s Bay North, School in course of formation, and School Buildings nearly completed.

Bangiora Girls’ School .... April 6 .... Present, 35 .... The copy books were discreditable, shewing a want of sufficient supervision. The reading and spelling of a large class of fourteen children, from six to eleven years of age, unusually imperfect and deficient.

Fernside School .... April 7 .... Present, 24 .... Satisfactory. The building and fences suffered in the recent floods; the building has already been repaired.

Eyreton School .... April 7 .... Present, 14 .... Satisfactory.

Custom Valley School .... Same day .... Present, 21 .... Satisfactory.

Harewood (near Oxford) .... April 9 .... Present, 29 .... Middling.

Oxford .... Same day .... Present, 45 .... Satisfactory.

Leeston School .... April 21 .... Present, 31 .... Highly commendable. Excellent order; good method; Registers satisfactory; copybooks, creditable. The School appears to give great satisfaction. Besides those living nearer, the attendance includes that of children from eight to eighteen years of age, who walk, ride, or drive four, five, or six miles to the School. The drill exercises are gone through with remarkable smartness and precision. N.B.—No stove or fireplace, premises unfenced, but the ground too dry for cutting sods.

South Selwyn School .... Same day .... Present, 16. New Teacher. Began again on the 13th instant.
