BOARD OF EDUCATION.
(JUNE 26—JULY 30, 1868)
MONTHLY REPORT OF INSPECTOR OF SCHOOLS.
TO THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD.
SIR,—I have the honour to submit a Summary Report on the Schools examined during the month.
I have also submitted, separately, a Report on the Orphan Asylum, examined in obedience to instructions from the Government.
OF THE SCHOOLS EXAMINED:—
Halswell School ... ... July 6 ... Present 29 ... Much improved.
Leeston School ... ... July 7 ... Present 22 ... Very creditable. The children have been carefully grounded in each elementary subject. The progress is remarkable, and is, in a great measure, due to the excellent economy of the School-time; every child is constantly employed, whether up at class or in the intervals. The pains taken by several older youths to make up for lost time, have resulted in very gratifying success. They come from long distances and attend regularly. The Military Drill is efficiently conducted by the master, after School hours; the orders are given with smartness, and obeyed with precision. The drill greatly improves the gait and mien of the Scholars, both in and out of School.
Lincoln School ... ... July 8 ... Present 20 ... Satisfactory. The first-class spelling was particularly good.
Prebbleton School ... ... July 9 ... Present 26 ... Improving.
St. Albans School ... ... July 13 ... Present 46 ... Improving.
Templeton School ... ... July 15 ... Present 27 ... Considerably improved:
In the Organization and Discipline, as to the cleaner and less encumbered state of the room, the arrangement of the desks, and the good order of the children.
In the Attainments, as to their being, with the exception of the arithmetic, more commensurate with the results of similar schools.
Rangiora Girls’ School ... Visited July 16. The examination was unavoidably postponed; for, owing to the prevalence of Hooping-cough, some children were absent; and there is an habitual laxity in assembling the school after the holidays; only six or seven were present, besides the Mistress’s own children.
Fernside School ... ... July 17 ... Present 30 ... Satisfactory, except as to the arithmetic which is only moderate, and the writing which is stiff and cramped.
Christchurch Wesleyan School ... July ... Present 95 ... Owing to the increase of Schools, public and private, in Christchurch, and to the consequent competition, the attendance in the older Schools is much reduced. The attainments were satisfactory.
Further details of each examination are entered in the Journal.
I have the honour to be, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
J. P. RESTELL,
Inspector of Schools.
