BOARD OF EDUCATION.
(JULY 31—August 27, 1863.)
INSPECTOR’S SUMMARY REPORT FOR THE MONTH.
To THE HONORABLE H. J TANCRED, CHAIRMAN.
SIR,—I have the honour to submit a Summary Report on the Schools and candidates examined during the month.
Of THE SCHOOLS EXAMINED:—
Kaiapoi Church School, ... Aug. 3 ... Present 71 ... The school was not up to its usual average of accuracy in elementary knowledge, but it had been interrupted by floods, sickness, repairs, and other causes, during the past year, and consequently had been less often examined. Several neat outline maps of New Zealand have been drawn by John Scarvell, and other boys. The arrangement of the enlarged building in the T square form, has this disadvantage, that the Master cannot, from his station at any class, command a view of the whole room. The arrangement of the desks on several sides of the room, is against all modern educational experience. The large and increasing attendance bears witness to the satisfactory character of the School. Handsome and costly map of New Zealand and Australia have been presented by a member of the School Committee.
Woodend School, ... Aug. 4 ... Present 47 ... Moderate. A map of New Zealand is requisite.
Saltwater Creek, ... Aug. 5 ... Present 10 ... The want of a bridge keeps some children from the School, and also affects the punctuality of others. The School has been put into a satisfactory state of repair since the floods; and, except that a map of New Zealand is requisite, is now well supplied with desks, fittings, and apparatus. With better appliances than formerly, the discipline is improved; but a Time-Table is requisite, and the Register is incomplete as to an important column. The attainments are satisfactory, except the Arithmetic.
Leithfield, ... Same day ... Present, 19 ... Improved. A better approach to the school has been made, by an easier gradient up the terrace.
Ashley Bank School, ... Aug. 6 ... Present, 24 ... The attainments were satisfactory, except the Reading, which requires more time and attention.
Flaxton School, ... Aug. 10 ... Present, 15 ... A larger attendance is expected, when the hooping-cough has ceased. The site is well-chosen as to its central position. The buildings are now satisfactory, the premises are now in good order as to fencing, drainage, &c. The fittings and apparatus are good, including an excellent stove, provided with a space for the evaporation of water, so as to rectify the dried and heated air. Maps—The two Hemispheres and New Zealand are requisite; also, a black board. The organisation and discipline are satisfactory, including Military drill well-taught by the Master. The children are being carefully and successfully taught.
Rangiora Boys’ School, ... August 11 ... Present, 37 ... The weather and the hooping-cough, thinned the attendance. The reading of the upper classes is particularly commendable for its fluency and expression, and more especially for the greater freedom from the ordinary gross defects of pronunciation. The Military drill has been discontinued.
Cust District School, ... August 12 ... Present, 25 ... Satisfactory.
