Education Inspector Reports

XXIV.

Further details of each examination are entered in the Journal.

Two Candidates for appointments have been examined: Alfred Wiggins an applicant for the Mastership of the Southbridge School; Charles Howard, an applicant for that of the Loburn School.

Before concluding this Report, I would state that, calling in passing at the North Road School, I observed the buildings and premises to be in a very unsatisfactory state as to repair and cleanliness. The School-room also is badly lighted; the fences are out of repair; the gate has gone. It would be well, if, before the appointment of a new Master, these defects were repaired.

I have the honour to be, Sir,

Your obedient servant,

J. P. RESTELL,

Inspector of Schools.

BOARD OF EDUCATION.

(August 28—September 24, 1868.)

SUMMARY REPORT OF INSPECTOR FOR THE MONTH.

To THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD.

Sir,—I have the honour to submit a Summary Report on the Schools examined, &c., during the month.

The five Government Scholars attending the Papanui St. Paul’s School were examined on the 28th instant: the others at different dates, as per Special Report, Appendix A.

Of the Schools Examined:—

Christchurch St. Luke’s ... August 31 ... Present 91 ... Considerably improved in numbers and efficiency. The Bible knowledge (partly due to the Sunday School) is very creditable. A map of New Zealand is wanted.

Christchurch St. Michael’s, September 2 ... Present 110 ... Satisfactory. A very general improvement and increasing attendance.

Christchurch St. Andrew’s, September 3 ... Present 49 ... The whole School is carefully and successfully taught. Some remarkably well written papers, superior specimens of composition and punctuation, were done by two little girls of ten and nine years of age respectively.

Papanui St. Paul’s School, September 4 ... Present 90 ... Satisfactory. The arithmetic and spelling are unusually correct, as compared with the rest of the Schools.

Papanui Wesleyan School, September 7 ... Present 25 ... This is a very elementary School; the attendance had been much interrupted during the winter but has considerably improved since the day of examination. The attainments were very middling.
