XXX.
Harewood Road School, September 8 ... Present 17 ... The School is thinly attended, the attainments moderate. A map of New Zealand is wanted.
Kaiapoi Wesleyan School, September 9 ... Present 47 ... Considerably improved. A map of New Zealand wanted.
Avonside School, September 10 ... Present 36 ... Two other late Scholars came in at 10.30 and 10.45 respectively; but could not be reckoned in the terms of the Ordinance. There is a satisfactory improvement in the attainments and efficiency.
Christchurch R. Catholic School, September 11 ... Present 35 ... Satisfactory. The attendance has been reduced by drafting the girls and infants into a separate School.
Christchurch Convent School, Girls and Infants, September 11 ... Present 58 ... The School is very satisfactorily conducted by ladies; the children removed from the formerly mixed School have much improved in their lessons, appearance, and manners. The School is in excellent order, children remarkably quiet, clean, and neat.
Riccarton School, September 14 ... Present 49 ... Very satisfactory.
Upper Heathcote School, September 15 ... Present 34 ... Much improved. A new black-board being required, the Chairman of Committee will have one made at once.
Lower Heathcote School, September 17 ... Present 34 ... Very middling.
Lyttelton Wesleyan School, September 18 ... Present 54 ... The children are of a lower average age and their course more elementary than in the other town Schools. They have, however, been very carefully taught; their reading, especially that of the little children of seven and eight, is very commendable for expression, fluency, and tolerably correct punctuation. The copy books are neat; but the handwriting is not good.
Miss E. Culliford, candidate for the appointment of Mistress to the Rangiora Girlsβ School, passed a satisfactory examination on the 21st inst., as per certificate.
The new Committee of the North Road School have made strenuous exertions to put the buildings, fences, and premises in proper order. The buildings are in a much better state of repair, the fences satisfactory, the front playground gravelled, and the whole in sufficiently good order for a master to commence his duties.
I have the honour, to be, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
J. P. RESTELL,
Inspector of Schools.
