ENGLISH GRAMMAR.

Parse the words underlined in the following quotation:—

ARITHMETIC.

  1. Reduce 121 yards to poles.
  2. Reduce 123,456,789 ozs. to tons.
  3. From the sum of ¾, ½, ⅓, ¼, subtract ⅞.
  4. Find cost of 13 ozs. of tea at 3s. 4d. per lb.
  5. Find cost of 7 ingots of gold, each weighing 4 ozs. 10 dwts. 12 grs., at £3 17s. 10½d. per oz.
  6. How many men working for 30 days, for eight hours a day, could embank as much Waimakariri as 16 men working for 20 days for 10 hours a day?
  7. Reduce 12s. 6d. to the decimal of a £.
  8. Reduce £1 13s. 4d. to the decimal of £2 18s. 4d.
  9. Divide 1.625 by 1.25.
  10. Find the Compound interest on £325 for 3½ years at 5 per cent.
  11. Find the Square Root of 708,964.

LATIN.

  1. Give the Genitive endings of each declension, and the most usual gender.
  2. Give any instance of Masculine Nouns of the first, Neuters in us, of the second, and of Neuter and Feminine Nouns of the fourth declension.
  3. Give Dative Plural of: Equus, a horse; and equa, a mare; filius, a son; and filia, a daughter.
  4. Give the Vocative, Singular of filius, servus, Georgius, Deus, and meus, mea, meum.
  5. Give the Genitive, Singular of Nemo, corpus, and opus.
  6. The Genitive, Plural of: civis, mare, dux, animal, urbs, serpens.
  7. Compare the Adjectives felix, vetus, humilis, magnus, pius; and the Adverbs graviter and bene.
  8. Give the accusative Singular of the Pronouns is, idem, ipse, and iste.
  9. Give the perfect and supine, if any, in the following Verbs:—Do, dare, to give; gaudeo, gaudere, to rejoice; eo, ire, to go; mordeo, mordere, to bite; tango, tangere, to touch; mitto, mittere, to send; vinco, vincere, to conquer; vincio, vincire, to bind; fero, ferre, to bear; tollo, tollere, to lift up.
  10. Translate into Latin:—If ye will love virtue, all good (men) will praise you. Caesar commanded the brave soldier to shut the gate of the city.
    Construe: Patria mihi carior est quam vita. Melior sapientia est auro. Hostes venerant urbem expugnaturi.
