About 13 minutes after midnight of the 18th, a smart shock of earthquake was felt, apparently over the greater portion of both islands, and more severely in localities lying north of Christchurch.

The weather was from the 17th of October to the 15th of November, as a rule, fine, but then broke, and for a day and a-half was very rough, upwards of two inches of rain falling with severe showers of hail. An interval of fine weather then occurred, with cool winds from the north-west on the 23rd and 24th. On the 25th the wind shifted to south-west, and at night blew heavily, accompanied by rain and hail. The remainder of the month was fine, the 30th being particularly hot, with a north-west wind, and the thermometer standing at 82 deg. 8 min. in the shade.

Hokitika.

A considerable quantity of rain fell during October, but the weather, with the exception ...

of the 15th and 16th, was not severe though very windy. A thunderstorm occurred on the night of the 14th November, and rain fell all day of the 15th. The weather on the 22nd was rough, with showers of hail. On the 24th a gale blew from the north-west, with showers of rain.

Bealey.

Snow fell on October 4th, 10th, 15th, 16th, 19th, and 20th, and on November 15th, 16th, and 22nd. The gale of October 15th was accompanied by thunder, the Barometer standing at 26.75. Thunderstorms were also experienced on October 12th and November 15th. The weather during both months was stormy, particularly so in October.
