✨ Education Inspector's Reports
xxxiv
Heathcote Valley ... Nov. 22 ... Present, 42 ... Much improved; as to the appearance and order of the room; assistant teacher; supply of apparatus &c.; and as to the attainments.
Christchurch Roman Catholic School ... Nov. 22 ... Present, 87 ... Satisfactory.
Avonside ... Nov. 25 ... Present, 53 ... Satisfactory.
I have also examined two candidates, Leon Cresswell, for the Mastership of the South Selwyn School, as per Report of Nov. 2nd; and Thomas May, candidate for an appointment, as per certificate of Nov. 27.
The latter having been an army schoolmaster, with the rank of Corporal, might prove useful in the event of any person being required to drill the school children. I have observed that some measure of the kind has been under the consideration of the General Government; and I believe that drill exercise would be very beneficial to the schools.
I have the honour to be, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
J. P. RESTELL,
Inspector of Schools.
BOARD OF EDUCATION,
(NOVEMBER 29—DECEMBER 26, 1867.)
INSPECTOR’S SUMMARY REPORT FOR THE MONTH.
To the Hon. H. J. Tancred, Chairman.
Sir,—I have the honour to submit a Summary Report on the Schools and Candidates examined during the month.
Twelve Ordinary Schools, including 421 children, have been examined, making, together with 91 present at the Lyttelton High School, 13 schools and 512 children. I also visited the Halswell School, but found it closed without the consent of the Chairman of the Local Committee.
Of the schools examined—those more remote (with the exception of the Pigeon Bay School, not examined, and the Okain’s Bay, highly satisfactory) are generally less satisfactory than those more accessible. This is partly owing to the newness of some—such as the Waimate and Arowhenua Schools—and to the imperfect organisation of the others:
Four are Satisfactory.
Two—Improved.
Two—Moderate.
Two—Very moderate.
One—Proposed new school.
LIST OF SCHOOLS EXAMINED, WITH REMARKS.
Upper Heathcote ... Nov. 29 ... Present, 27 ... Satisfactory.
Arowhenua ... Dec. 2 ... Present, 32 ... Moderate. The school-room very clean; the children also remarkably clean, nice, and orderly. It is questionable whether a rather high rate of fees does not exclude children of a poorer class.
Registers incomplete, as to columns II. and III.
