ring was seen very frequently at night over the mountains in the interior. Spontaneous evaporation during the month, 5"66 inches. The mean temperature of the month, 54°’3, was 1°’3 above the average. Mean direction of the wind, E.N.E.

Rainfall from January 1 to October 31 each year, as follows:-

The highest and lowest temperature in the shade was 60°’8 and 30°’0. Solar and terrestrial radiations were not registered, owing to the instruments having been accidentally broken. The prevailing direction of the wind was N.W. and S.W.

Hokitika, Nov. 4, 1867.

UNDER the provisions of Clause XII of "The Gold Fields Act, 1866," I hereby grant to the "United Extended Gold Mining Company" a special claim of Eleven Acres, in lieu of that of Nine Acres granted to the said Company on the 24th of April, 1867, subject to the following conditions, in addition to those already mentioned:-

  1. The additional two acres to be marked off as shown in the plan prepared by the Mining Surveyor; the expenses to be defrayed by the Company.

  2. Fifty (50) men to be constantly employed on the claim, instead of forty-five as at present.

  3. All damage done to buildings or streets to be made good at the expense of the Company.

HOKITIKA.

An exceedingly wet month throughout; rain fell, more or less, on twenty-seven days, equal to 22"18 inches; greatest fall in one day, 3"18 inches, on the 24th. There were two or three fine days about the middle of the month, but the general character was one of the wettest and stormiest on record here. There were thunder storms on the 1st, 2nd, and 26th, and gales of wind on the 6th, 18th, and 26th from the N.E., W., and S.W. respectively. Hail fell on the 2nd and 13th, and fog prevailed on the 23rd, 24th, and 25th.

The barometer was much depressed throughout the month, but not nearly to so great an extent as at Christchurch; the mean atmospheric pressure at each station being 29"629 inches and 29"484 inches. Mean direction of the wind, N.W. by W.

Rainfall from January 1 to October 31 each year, as follows:-

1867 ... 80"45 inches on 149 days.
1866 ... 99"14 " 172 "

BEALEY.

At this station also the weather was very wet and stormy throughout the month of October. There were only four days on which rain did not fall. Thunder storms occurred on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 19th, and 26th, and gales of wind from N.W. on the 18th and 24th. Snow fell on the 27th and 29th, on the latter day the flats were covered three inches deep. The mean temperature, 45°’3, was 9° below Christchurch.
