31st. About that time the barometer ranged very low, with other indications of rough weather in back country.
The mean temperature of the month, 59°.8, was about the average. The range of temperature in shade 39°.6, or from 81°.8 to 41°.7. Greatest and least daily range 30°.2 and 5°.2 on the 28th and 5th respectively. The rainfall was considerably above the mean 3.094 inches against 1.057 inches. Spontaneous evaporation exposed to sun and wind, 6.077 inches. Lightning without thunder was seen over the mountains on the night of the 6th. The mean direction of the wind was E.S.E.
The rainfall was rather below the average for the district, namely, 9.85 inches on 20 days. Two periods of very fine weather occurred from the 9th to the 13th, and from the 23rd to the 26th, all inclusive. Very heavy rain fell on the 20th, equal to 2.84 inches in depth, in the 24 hours. Some days were very sultry; the range of temperature in the shade during the month was only 23°, or from 70° to 47°. Mean daily range, 11°.1. The mean temperature of the air was nearly 1° higher than in Christchurch. Mean humidity, 89. Mean direction of the wind, N.W. by W. The only gale registered occurred on the night of the 6th, when it blew hard from the N.E. with heavy rain.

On the West Coast, the last month of 1866 passed off without any remarkable atmospheric disturbances taking place.
