Congratulating the Board on the evident improvement during the past twelve months,

I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your humble and obedient servant,
JAS. GEO. HAWKES.

PS.—Since concluding the above I have received the enclosed Report from Dr. Foster, by which you will see that Caygill still remains first, Jennings takes second place, Triggs third, and Ladbrook fourth. I would therefore wish to substitute Walter Bean’s name for Jennings in my particular recommendation.

I would further recommend that any future examinations should be extended over two days, as it is impossible to do justice to all the needful subjects in one day.

To J. G. HAWKES, Esq.
Christchurch, July 1, 1867.

Arithmetic and Scripture History.

Dear Sir,

I have carefully examined the papers of the 18 candidates, written in answer to the papers set by me on Friday. The result is as follows:—

Assuming the whole number of marks for my paper to be 50, I award the first seven as follows:—

Caygill, 40 ... Jennings, 35 ... Gordon, 30 ... Heney, 27 ... Dixon, 23 ... Pye, 20 ... Ladbrook, 17.

The rest I do not place.

Pye would perhaps have stood better but for his bad writing, which was in places unintelligible. Ladbrook’s writing was also bad. Gordon’s spelling was imperfect.

Truly yours,
CHAS. J. FOSTER.
