J. V. Colborne Veel,
G. MacfarIan,
Wm. Jas. Habens,
Examiners.
To the Chairman of the Board of Education.
Christchurch, June 29, 1867.
Sir,
I have the honor to inform you that, in accordance with the request and instructions received from you, I, on Friday the 28th instant, examined the eighteen (18) candidates (from the Government Schools) for four Scholarships granted by the Government, and the result, as far as my papers go, is in favor of Caygill, Walter Bean, Triggs and Ladbrook; of course this may be altered by the marks awarded by Doctor Foster for Arithmetic and Sacred History.
I have to report that I examined, by papers only, in Dictation, Spelling, Grammar, Parsing, Geography, and Writing, and on the whole found the boys thoroughly grounded in the various subjects; but would wish to direct the attention of the various schoolmasters to the necessity of better practice in Spelling and Punctuation, which were decidedly faulty, with but comparatively few exceptions.
I regret to say that time would not permit my examining the candidates in Modern History and Reading.
I have great pleasure in reporting on the orderly behaviour, thorough attention, and evident desire to do their best, evinced by every one of the candidates.
I beg particularly to recommend to the attention of the Board, W. Charles Bean, the youngest of the candidates, who, though unsuccessful, I consider to be one of the most deserving, as his acquirments are far beyond his age, and reflect the greatest possible credit on his teachers and his own application, and deserve not only this notice but some more substantial recognition, if the Board has any in its power to bestow. I would likewise especially mention Charles Jennings, as being a most deserving candidate.
I must not conclude without making honorable mention of the following boys, for the manner in which they passed the examination on the different subjects; viz—
Geography.—Parlane, Triggs, W. Bean, Jennings, Caygill, Merton, Heney, Dixon, Pye, Ladbrook, Gordon.
Spelling.—Caygill, Ladbrook, Pye, Triggs, W. Bean, Orchard.
Dictation.—Merton, Triggs, Dixon, Gordon, Parlane, Caygill, Jennings, Ladbrook.
Grammar.—Caygill, Parlane, Gordon, Dixon, Jenkins, W. Bean, Ladbrook, Merton, Jennings, Thornton, Heney.
Writing.—Jennings, Triggs, Ladbrook, W. Bean, Heney, Thornton, W. C. Bean.
Parsing.—Caygill, W. Bean, Pye, Triggs, Heney, Dixon, Ladbrook, Jennings, Thornton, Merton, Gordon.
