REMARKS.
CHRISTCHURCH.
Bright, almost cloudless, weather prevailed during the first fortnight of March; in general very warm, and exceedingly hot and oppressive on the 8th, 9th, and 10th, when the shaded thermometer rose 85°·0, 84°·8, and 78°·0 respectively. At 10.30 p.m., on the 15th, a south-west gale began, accompanied with very heavy rain, and at first with hail and lightning. The storm of wind and rain continued until the forenoon of the 17th. During the 24 hours ending 9.30 a.m. on the 17th, 2·172 inches of rain were collected; the velocity of the wind in the same time was 470 miles:—these are the extremes of wind and rain in 24 hours yet registered at the station. In the night preceding the 16th a further quantity of rain, equal to 1·245 inches, fell, making a total of 3·417 inches in 35 hours. From
