✨ Correspondence and Notices
To the Editor of the Lyttelton Times.
Christchurch, Jan. 22, 1866.
Sir,—I have always understood it was the duty and privilege of a journalist to disseminate truth and expose error. You have failed in regard to what I said at St. Albans in performing this duty, for you have published a most garbled and incorrect report, and commented upon it in a manner which truth does not warrant.
If you wish the public to understand my scheme, you can reprint it from the Timaru Herald, of the 19th instant, and then comment upon it in any way you please; but I ought not to be charged with language and sentiments which I have not uttered, and be subjected to comments not justified by truth.
I am, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
(Signed) W. T. L. Travers.
To the Editor of the Lyttelton Times.
Superintendent’s Office,
January 24, 1866.
Sir,—I enclose copies of correspondence relative to the report in the Lyttelton Times of the meeting held by Mr. Travers at St. Albans, and have to request that you will furnish me with an explanation of the matters referred to.
I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
(Signed) S. Bealey,
Superintendent.
Lyttelton Times Office,
Christchurch, Jan. 24, 1866.
The Editor of the Lyttelton Times begs to acknowledge the receipt of His Honor the Superintendent’s letter of the 24th instant, and the enclosed correspondence relative to a statement alleged to have been made by Mr. W. T. L. Travers at St. Albans on Friday evening last, that
“There were many purchases and land jobs being done on the south line of railway by the present members of the Government.”
In reply to His Honor’s request to be furnished with an explanation of the matters referred to, the Editor begs to state that he is unable to offer any explanation relative to purchases and land jobs on the south line of railway, and must hold himself entirely irresponsible for anything Mr. W. T. L. Travers may assert or deny.
