VOL. XIII.] TUESDAY, JANUARY 30, 1866. [No. VIII.]

Provincial Secretary’s Office,
Christchurch, Jan. 27, 1866.

HIS Honor the Superintendent directs
the publication of the following
Correspondence for general information.

Enw. JOLLIE,
Provincial Secretary.

To W. T. L. Travers, Esq.,
Superintendent’s Office,
Christchurch, Jan. 22, 1866.

Sir,—In the “Lyttelton Times” of this
day, I find that you are reported, at a meeting
held at St. Albans, on Friday evening, to
have made the following statement: “There
were many purchases and land jobs being
done on the south line of railway by the
present members of the Government.”

I need not remind you that, as Superin-
tendent of the Province, it will be my duty,
after reading this statement, to make a
strict inquiry into the circumstances alluded
to. I have therefore to request that you will
inform me whether the words attributed
to you are accurately reported? and if so,
that you will at once furnish me with the
evidence on which you ground this accusa-
tion.

I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
(Signed) S. BEaley,
Superintendent.

To His Honor the Superintendent,
Christchurch,
Christchurch, Jan. 22, 1866.

Sir,—I have the honor to acknowledge
the receipt of your Honor’s letter of this
day’s date, and to state, in reply, that I did
not use the expression referred to, or any
other bearing the same construction, and
that I must hold myself entirely irrespons-
able for anything the “Lyttelton Times”
may choose to print concerning me.

Before receiving your Honor’s letter, I
had written to the “Lyttelton Times” a
letter of which I enclose a copy.

I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
(Signed) Wm. Thos. Locke Travers.

Vol. 13.—No. 8.
