Provincial Secretary’s Office,
Christchurch, July 6, 1866.
THE following Reports of the Examiners appointed to examine the Candidates for Scholarships, together with the award made by the Board of Education, are published for general information.
F. E. STEWART,
Provincial Secretary.
Christchurch, June 28, 1866.
To the Board of Education,
Christchurch.
GENTLEMEN,
We beg to submit to the Board a tabular statement of the results of the examination. The first column represents the part of the examination conducted by Mr. Macfarlan, in Arithmetic and a little Euclid. The second column contains the marks given by Mr. Veel for Latin and Ancient History. The third column gives the result of Mr. Habens’ examination in Geography, English Composition, Modern and Sacred History. The total number of marks in each examiner’s department was 100. We also enclose a table showing the relative positions of the boys. In this table, the number of marks which the best boy in each department obtained is taken as the unit. Both methods of marking give exactly the same order of merit throughout the entire list. The Board will see that Stifle is easily first, and that he obtained the first place in two out of the three departments. Cotterill comes next; and the examiners are of opinion that Atack deserves honourable mention.
We beg to remain
Your obedient servants,
GEORGE MACFARLAN,
J. COLBORNE VEEL,
WM. JAS. HABENS.
