Any waterman or lighterman plying
for hire, without a licence, shall be liable to
a fine not exceeding five pounds. -
No boat shall be allowed to remain at
any landing place, or to make fast to any
steps or handrails belonging thereto, which
may hereafter be erected, without some
person in charge ready to remove the said
boat, when required to do so by the Harbour
Master or person deputed by him. -
Any boatman resisting, impeding, or
obstructing the Harbour Master, Pilot, or
other person deputed by either of them, in
the execution of his duty, or using threatening
or abusive language to them, or any of them,
shall forfeit and pay a sum not exceeding
fifty pounds. -
Any boatman charging more than the
authorised rates or fares, or refusing to em-
ploy his boat when required to do so, shall
be liable to forfeit his licence, and pay a
penalty of five pounds. -
Every waterman shall, upon payment of
one pound sterling, receive a licence; to be in
force for one year from the date of issue. -
The number of passengers allowed to
be carried in any boat shall be specified in
the licence, and any boatman conveying a
larger number of passengers, or a greater
quantity of luggage, than is allowed in his
licence, shall forfeit and pay a sum not
exceeding five pounds. -
The authorised charges are as follows,
From any wharf or landing place
on the north side of the Hokitika
River, to any wharf or landing place
opposite, single fare to or from ... 1 0
From any place on Gibson’s Quay, to
the Southern Flagstaff, single fare
to or from ... 2 0
For each horse ... 2 0
Other cargo at the rate of 1s per cwt.

Each boat shall carry if required an
ordinary swag with every passenger, and a
pack with every horse without additional
charge. -
Fares and charges for cargo to or from
places up the river beyond the township of
Hokitika as per agreement. -
No protection will be granted, nor any
fare authorised for boatmen attempting to
cross the bar. -
All ballast lighters, and cargo boats
plying for hire, within the Port shall be
measured, marked, and registered, and every
master of such vessel shall, upon payment of
three shillings per ton register, receive a
licence to be in force for one year from the
date of issue. -
Any person holding a licence for a
cargo boat, who shall load the same in excess
of the quantity allowed in accordance with
his licence, shall forfeit his licence, and be
liable to a penalty of five pounds.
