HIS Honor the Superintendent directs
it to be notified that Wednesday, the 24th instant, will be observed as a Holiday,
in honour of Her Majesty’s Birthday;
and that the Public Offices will be closed
on that day.

PROCLAMATION
By His Honor SAMUEL BEALEY, Esq.,
Superintendent of the Province of Canterbury, proclaiming a Gaol at Hokitika.
WHEREAS by an Ordinance enacted by the Lieutenant-Governor of New Zealand, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council thereof, Session VII., No. 7, intituled “An Ordinance for the Regulation of Prisons,” it is enacted that the Governor shall be lawful from time to time, as to him shall seem meet, by proclamation, to declare any house, building, enclosure, or place to be a public gaol, and after the publication of any such proclamation, such house, building, enclosure, or place, shall be deemed and taken to be a public gaol; and whereas by an Ordinance of the Superintendent and Provincial Council of the Province of Canterbury, intituled “The Empowering Ordinance, Session II., No. 2,” it is enacted that the powers conferred on the Governors of New Zealand, by the above-recited Ordinance, are within the limits of the Province of Canterbury conferred on the Superintendent thereof; and whereas it is desirable that the building now used as a lock-up on the north side of the Police Reserve at Hokitika, in the Province of Canterbury, should be proclaimed a public gaol: Now therefore, I, Samuel Bealey, Superintendent of the said Province, by virtue of the powers vested in me as aforesaid, do hereby proclaim and declare that the building aforesaid shall be deemed and taken to be a public gaol.
