as to him shall seem meet, and that it shall
also be lawful for His Excellency the
Governor, from time to time, to make such
regulations respecting the training, arms,
and accoutrements, clothing and equipments
of such Force, and respecting all other
matters connected therewith, as may be
required for promoting the discipline and
efficiency thereof; and also to direct the
employment and distribution of the said
Force, as to him shall seem meet. And
whereas by a certain Ordinance passed by
the Superintendent of the Province of Can-
terbury, with the advice and consent of the
Council thereof, intituled, "The Empower-
ing Ordinance, Session II, No. 2," that all
such powers as are, by the several Ordi-
nances recited in the Schedule to this
Ordinance, conferred on the Governor-in-
Chief, Lieutenant-Governors, or Governors
of New Zealand, or on the Lieutenant-
Governor of New Munster, or on the
Officer Administering the Government of
the Colony or Province for the time
being, are hereby within the limits of
the Province of Canterbury conferred on
the Superintendent thereof; and whereas
in the Schedule to the last recited Ordi-
nance is comprised the said firstly re-
cited Ordinance; and whereas it is expe-
dient that an armed Police Force should
be created for the said Province of Can-
terbury, and that a Commissioner and
Inspectors and other Officers should be
appointed, and that regulations should be
made respecting such armed Police Force,

Now I, SAMUEL BEALEY, Esquire,
Superintendent of the said Province of Can-
terbury, by virtue and in exercise of the
powers vested in me in that behalf do hereby
direct that an armed Police Force shall be
embodied to act as Constables within the
said Province of Canterbury, and that such
armed Police Force shall consist of thirty-
eight men, and be composed of one Com-
missioner, one Inspector, and thirty-six
non-commissioned Officers and Privates, and
I do further hereby direct that the general
superintendence and management of the
said Force shall be vested in the said Com-
missioner, and that it shall be the duty of
the said Commissioner from time to time to
engage and appoint all such non-commis-
sioned Officers and Privates as shall be
required for the said Force.

Given under my hand, at Christchurch,
this Twenty-third day of March, One
thousand eight hundred and sixty-
four.

SALE OF TOWN AND RURAL LANDS.

HIS Honor the Superintendent directs it
to be notified that he has fixed Thurs-
day, the Fifth day of May, One thousand
eight hundred and sixty-four, at the hour
of Noon, at a sitting of the Waste Lands
Board, in the Land Office, at Christchurch,
as the time and place when a sale by
auction of Town and Rural Land shall take
place, in accordance with clause 24 and
clause 35 of the Waste Lands Regulations,
subject to the usual conditions of sale, and
in conformity with the Regulations for the
disposal, sale, letting, and occupation of the
Waste Lands of the Crown now in force
within the Province of Canterbury.

Applications will be received by the
Waste Lands Board on and up to Thurs-
day, the Twenty-first day of April, One
thousand eight hundred and sixty-four.
