HIS Honor the Superintendent directs the publication of the following Report of the Railway and Bridge Commission.
W.M. ROLLESTON,
Provincial Secretary.
REPORT OF THE RAILWAY AND BRIDGE COMMISSION
APPOINTED 27TH OCTOBER, 1863.
The Commissioners appointed to reconsider the lines of railway projected to the South and North, and the bridges over the large rivers in connection therewith, having completed their examination of the Southern line of Railway, and considering that the Government may desire to take immediate action with regard to this line, have the honor to submit the following report, reserving any remarks on the Northern line for a future occasion.
The first subject which engaged the attention of the Commission was that of determining the best locality for bridging the river Rakaia. With this object they have examined the river from the swamps near the sea to the point where the hills close on the river near Mr. Lean’s station. The actual waterway at this point is divided into two comparatively narrow channels by a small rocky bush-covered island, and it would be easy to throw a bridge of a single span across each of these channels, but on each side of the river rise in a series of terraces to a height of 472 feet on the north and 559 feet on the south, with a width of 9174 feet. This examination has convinced them that to carry a railway across the river at the gorge would necessitate such a series of works of such magnitude and of such a costly nature as to render the scheme practically impossible. In addition to the difficulty and expense of crossing the river at this point, it must also be taken into consideration that in order to reach the line would have to be lengthened about...
