The remaining conditions, Nos. 4 and following, are the same as in James Main’s License.

SMITH, DAVID, Waituna Creek, “Smith’s Accommodation House”

  1. All the premises to be kept in good repair. To provide in his house besides the tap-room, or room answering as such, one public and one private sitting-room.

  2. Not less than ten beds for travellers, in not less than two separate bed-rooms.

  3. To provide a shed sufficiently weathertight and fit for the accommodation of at least seven horses.

The remaining conditions, Nos. 4 and following, are the same as in James Main’s License.

BUTTERWORTH, WILLIAM, River Pareora, “Pareora Accommodation House”

  1. All the premises to be kept in good repair. To provide in his house besides the tap-room, or room answering as such, one public and one private sitting-room.

  2. Not less than eleven beds for travellers, in not less than four separate bed-rooms.

The remaining conditions, Nos. 4 and following, are the same as in James Main’s License.

  1. To provide a shed sufficiently weathertight and fit for the accommodation of at least six horses.

REDFERN, SALATHIEL, Oxford, “Redfern’s Accommodation House”

  1. All the premises to be kept in good repair. To provide in his house besides the tap-room, or room answering as such, one public and one private sitting-room.

  2. Not less than twelve beds for travellers, in not less than six separate bed-rooms.

  3. To provide a shed sufficiently weathertight and fit for the accommodation of at least six horses.

WARD, JOSEPH, Cheviot District, “Weka Pass Hotel”

  1. All the premises to be kept in good repair. To provide in his house besides the tap-room, or room answering as such, one public and one private sitting-room.

  2. Not less than seven beds for travellers, in not less than six separate bed-rooms.

  3. To provide a shed sufficiently weathertight and fit for the accommodation of at least six horses.

The remaining conditions, Nos. 4 and following, are the same as in James Main’s License.


DUNFORD, WILLIAM, Rakaia River, Dunford’s “Accommodation House”

  1. All the premises to be kept in good repair. To provide in his house besides the tap-room, or room answering as such, one public and one private sitting-room.

  2. Not less than fifteen beds for travellers, in not less than six separate bed-rooms.

  3. To provide a shed sufficiently weathertight and fit for the accommodation of at least seven horses.

4, 5, 6, 7, same as in James Main’s License.

  1. Nil.

  2. Not to keep a lamp burning at night outside the house.

10, 11, 12, same as in James Main’s License.

  1. Conditions regarding the ferry over the Rakaia to stand as per special contract with the Provincial Government. Officers of the Supreme Court, Magistrates, and Police Constables on duty, and prisoners to be ferried free of charge. To afford every assistance in his power in directing strangers to a safe fording across the river.

14, 15, 16, same as in James Main’s License.


TURTON, WILLIAM, Ashburton or Hakatere River, “Ashburton Accommodation House”

  1. All the premises to be kept in good repair. To provide in his house besides the tap-room, or room answering as such, one public and one private sitting-room.

  2. Not less than eleven beds for travellers, in not less than five separate bed-rooms.

  3. To provide a shed sufficiently weathertight and fit for the accommodation of at least six horses.

4, 5, 6, 7, same as in James Main’s License.

  1. To keep a lamp burning with two burners from sunset to sunrise, giving a sufficiently bright light, and being so lighted as not to be visible on the south bank of the Ashburton.

  2. Nil.

10, 11, 12, same as in James Main’s License.

  1. If required, to accompany foot passengers and horsemen across the river at a charge not exceeding 6d. each; and persons driving drays or other vehicles, at a charge not exceeding 1s. for each dray or vehicle. Officers of the Supreme Court, Magistrates, and Police Constables on duty, and prisoners to be put across the river free of charge. To afford every assistance in directing strangers to a safe fording across the river.

14, 15, 16, same as in James Main’s License.
