PROCLAMATION.

I James Edward Fitz Gerald,
Superintendent of the Province of Canterbury, do hereby in pursuance of the powers vested in me in that behalf by the 23rd clause of the Regulations for the disposal, sale, letting, and occupation of the Waste Lands of the Crown in the Province of Canterbury, and upon the recommendation of the Provincial Council, Proclaim and Declare, that there shall be Towns within the meaning of the said Regulations, to be called respectively, the Town of Akaroa and the Town of Timaru, whereof the sites shall be respectively as follows:—

The Town of Akaroa shall be situated on the East side of the Harbour of Akaroa and shall be bounded by a line commencing at the point where the Northern Branch of the Mill Stream falls into the Sea continued Easterly along the northern branch of the said stream to the first fork; thence in a straight line southerly to the Trigonometrical Pole marked A on the hill; thence in the same direction to the point where the Balgueri Road meets the eastern boundary of Watson Street; thence along the Eastern side of the last named Road to where it crosses the Eastern boundary line of Le Lievre’s land; thence southerly along the said Eastern boundary, and along the boundary of Malmanche’s land to the Rue Charbonnier; thence across the Rue Charbonnier and onwards southerly in the same direct line as the Eastern boundary of Malmanche’s land to Aylmer-street; thence westerly along the Southern side of the said Street to its junction with South Street; thence along the Eastern side of the last named street till it meets a continuation of the North East side of the Abattoir Reserve, thence North

Westerly along the said line and the North Eastern boundary of the Abattoir Reserve to Low water mark; thence along the sea coast to the commencing point; which boundary line of the said Town is marked in a red dotted line on the Map of the Town and Suburbs of Akaroa, signed by the Chief Surveyor and marked A 3 and deposited in the Land Office at Christchurch.

The Town of Timaru shall be situated on the Beach at Timaru, and is included within a line commencing at a point on the Beach where a continuation of the South side of the Messrs. Rhodes’ freehold land meets the sea, along the sea coast southerly to Point Patiti, a distance of seventy-six chains; thence due west a distance of forty chains, thence northerly at a distance of forty chains from and parallel to High water mark, till it meets the South boundary line of Messrs. Rhodes’ said freehold land; thence easterly along the said boundary to the starting point: which boundary line of the said Town of Timaru, is marked in a red dotted line on the map of the Town and Suburbs of Timaru, signed by the Chief Surveyor and marked A 4, and deposited in the Land Office at Christchurch.

Given under my hand this First day of May, One thousand eight hundred and fifty six, and sealed with the Public Seal of the Province.
