a penalty not exceeding £50, and not less
than £5.
(5). For making, constructing, or repairing any arms, gunpowder, or other warlike
stores without having obtained a license, a
sum not exceeding £50, and not less
than £5.
(6). For a person being a dealer in Gunpowder who shall keep more than fifty
pounds weight of Gunpowder, or not being
a dealer more than fifteen pounds weight of
Gunpowder except by license,
any sum
not exceeding £20.
(7). In all cases of conviction there shall
be awarded to any person who shall have
been active in procuring such conviction
one half of the penalty to be recovered.

NOTICE.
Province of Canterbury to Wit:—
WHEREAS a writ under the hand of James Edward Fitz Gerald, Esq., Superintendent of the said Province, bearing date the sixth day of September, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty five, hath been directed to me, Henry John Tancred, Esq., as Returning Officer for the Christchurch Country District, in the said Province, requiring and commanding me to cause to be elected by and from amongst the voters duly qualified for that purpose, freely and indifferently, and in form and manner by law prescribed, One Person to serve as a member of the Provincial Council for the Christchurch Country District in place of Charles Simeon, Esq., resigned : NOW therefore, I, the said Henry John Tancred, Returning-Officer for the Christchurch Country District do hereby in pursuance of the said recited writ, give notice, that a public meeting of the electors of the Christchurch Country District, will be holden in the Market place of the town of Christchurch, on Friday the 28th day of September instant, at noon, for the purpose of nominating one person to serve as a member of the Provincial Council for the Christchurch Country District : and in the event of a Poll being demanded for the Candidates, or any of them, such polling shall take place on Saturday the 29th day of September instant in the lobby of the Provincial Council Chamber, Christchurch, in the Police Office at Lyttelton, and at Mr. Black’s Store at Kaiapoi. The Voting to commence at any time after nine o’clock, a.m., of the said day, and to close at four o’clock, p.m., of the same day.

NOTICE TO NEWLY ARRIVED IMMIGRANTS.
NOTICE is hereby given, that if any IMMIGRANTS who have given Promissory Notes in part payment of assisted passages to this Province, and of which payment will be required a year after the date of their landing, are willing to pay the whole or any part of their engagements before that time, they will be allowed a discount as follows:—
Within three months after landing 10 per cent.
Within six months do. 5 per cent.
Payment to be made to the Provincial Treasurer, Christchurch.
