✨ Arms and Ammunition Regulations
like stores, and for carrying into effect the provisions of the above recited Ordinances, and Proclamation, and Notice, respectively, within the Province of Canterbury :--Now therefore, I, James Edward Fitz Gerald, the Superintendent of the Province of Canterbury, in pursuance of the powers vested in me by the above mentioned Ordinances, and of all other powers in that behalf enabling me, do hereby Proclaim and Declare that, from and after the date hereof, the following Regulations for the Importation and sale of arms, gunpowder, and other warlike stores, shall be in force within the said Province, that is to say ;-
(1.) All Licenses heretofore issued, and now in force for the importation, sale, making and repairing of gunpowder, arms, and other warlike stores, within the Province of Canterbury are hereby cancelled.
(2.) No Gunpowder, Arms, or other Warlike Stores shall be imported into the Province of Canterbury except by a Special license under the hand of the Superintendent, issued upon the recommendation of the Resident Magistrate, to whom all applications must be made.
(3.) No Gunpowder, exceeding 50 lbs. in weight shall be landed in the Province, unless to be deposited in the Public Powder Magazine.
(4.) The New Magazine in "Polhill’s Bay" is hereby declared to be a Public Powder Magazine.
(5.) No Gunpowder shall be removed from the Powder Magazine except under a license under the hand of the Superintendent, issued in pursuance of a recommendation of the Resident Magistrate.
(6.) It shall not be lawful for any person to sell any arms, gunpowder, or other warlike stores, unless he shall possess a license under the hand of the Superintendent authorizing him to sell arms and ammunition, nor unless the person purchasing any such arms or ammunition, shall produce a license to purchase, at Lyttelton, Akaroa, and Kaiapoi from the Resident Magistrates of those places respectively, and at Christchurch from the Provincial Secretary.
(7.) Licenses authorizing the sale, making and repairing of arms, and licenses to sell ammunition, will be issued for three months, on condition that not more than one pound weight of gunpowder, five hundred percussion caps, and ten pounds weight of shot, be sold to any one person during that period ; and that none of these articles be sold to any aboriginal native.
(8.) It shall be the duty of the Provincial Secretary to keep an accurate record of all the Licenses issued under the authority of this Proclamation, and to furnish copies thereof to the Resident Magistrates in the Province.
(9.) It shall be the duty of every Resident Magistrate to keep an accurate copy of all the Licenses issued by him under this Proclamation, and to transmit a copy of the same on the first day of every month to the Superintendent.
(10.) Nothing contained in this Proclamation shall prevent any person coming into the Colony, from landing one gun and one brace of pistols for purposes of sporting or self-defence, or shall apply to the importation of supplies for the use of Her Majesty’s land and sea forces.
(11.) This proclamation shall come into operation on the 17th day of September instant.

NOTICE.
Provincial Secretary’s Office,
Christchurch, Sept. 10, 1855.
His Honor the Superintendent directs it to be notified for public information that the penalties for the infringement of the Ordinances relating to the importation, sale, repair, and removal of arms and ammunition will be strictly enforced.
The Penalties are as follows :-
(1.) For landing, importing, or selling any Arms, Gunpowder, or other warlike stores contrary to the Regulations of the Proclamation issued this day in that behalf, £500, and the forfeiture of all the arms and ammunition so landed or sold.
(2.) The like penalty on the master of the vessel in which such arms or ammunition are imported ; and the forfeiture of the vessel.
(3.) For selling or disposing of any arms, gunpowder, or other warlike stores contrary to the regulations of the Proclamation issued this day in that behalf any sum not exceeding £500, and the forfeiture of the materials sold.
(4.) For removing any arms or other warlike stores, or any gunpowder exceeding 2 lbs in weight, without a license granted by some Justice of the Peace, except for the
