PROCLAMATION.
WHEREAS by an Ordinance passed by the Lieutenant Governor and Legislative Council of New Zealand entitled an Ordinance for the Regulation of Prisons, Sess. VII., No. 7, it was enacted that it should be lawful for His Excellency the Governor from time to time, as to him should seem meet by Proclamation to declare any house, building, enclosure, or place to be a Public Gaol: And Whereas by an Ordinance passed by the Superintendent and Provincial Council of the Province of Canterbury, entitled the Empowering Ordinance, Sess. II., No. 2, it was enacted that the powers conferred on the Governor by the above recited Ordinance should thereafter be conferred within the limits of the Province of Canterbury, upon the Superintendent thereof: Now therefore, I, James Edward Fitz Gerald, Superintendent of the said Province, by virtue of the powers vested in me by the above recited Ordinances, and of all other powers in that behalf, enabling me, do by this Proclamation, proclaim and declare that the several parcels of land commonly known and marked on the maps of the Canterbury Association, as the reserves for Police Court and Gaol in the Town of Lyttelton, together with all the buildings situate thereon shall be deemed and taken to be a Public Gaol, within the meaning of the above recited Ordinance for the regulation of Prisons.
Given under my hand at Christchurch, this 23rd day of August, one thousand eight hundred and fifty-five.
