(No. 52.)
Immigration Office,
Wellington, 29th April, 1876.
Sir,β
I have the honour to inform you that in view of the considerable reduction of immigration, which has been decided upon by the Government for the ensuing year, it appears to me that the services of the Officers mentioned in the Schedule hereto could very well be dispensed with; with regard to the conduct of the Department in Auckland, on Mr. Ellis' retirement, I propose reappointing Major Green, who is familiar with the details of the work.
In anticipation of your Honor agreeing with me in this, I have directed letters to be sent to the gentlemen referred to, giving them three months' notice, in accordance with the terms of their appointment.
Having taken this course in order to avoid claims being made against the Government in the event of the proposed reduction being carried into effect, I shall be glad to give every consideration to any proposals which your Honor may make in the matter,
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient Servant.
