Provincial Notifications and Highway District Boundaries

Auckland Provincial Government Gazette.

Grahamstown, 17th June, 1874.

SIR,—Referring to my letter No. 334, dated 11th instant, I have the honor further to report that the gas in the Crown Prince has so far abated that working has been resumed in No. 1 drive and slopes.

The Davy Lamp, which has answered its purpose, has enabled the miners to work in the fiery drive without danger.

Investigation as to the origin of the gas has been continued, and has resulted in the discovery of a deposit of carbonised and decayed timber, roots and trunks of trees. A specimen of which is herewith sent.

I have, &c.,

(Signed) H. GOLDSMITH,
Mining Inspector.

His Honor the Superintendent.
