Land Purchase Office,
Auckland, 23rd, January, 1866.
SIR,—Having in conversation with Paora and other chiefs of the Ngatiwhatua tribe learned that it might be possible to obtain from them a grant to the public of so much of the Kaipara and Waitemata Portage as might hereafter be required for a line of road or canal, and being instructed by you to make a direct application forthwith for the necessary Deed of Dedication to the Public with a form of which you furnished one, I have now the honor to forward herewith the original and translation of that Deed, duly signed by Paora Tuhaere, and six other chiefs of the tribe.
As this is the first instance in which Natives, have given land free of cost for such purpose, I submit that a letter of thanks be forwarded to Paora, and inserted also in the Provincial Gazette for the information and encouragement of the Natives generally.
I have, &c.
JOHN WHITE,
Land Purchase Commissioner.
The Crown Lands Commissioner,
Auckland.
Know all men by these presents that we, the chiefs and people of the Ngatiwhatua tribe, whose names are signed to this Deed, being by Native custom the owners of all that land set forth and specified in this Deed, the boundaries of which land are as follow :—Commencing at the Kumeu creek, where the road leads from Pitoitoi to Ongarahu; thence on by the Kumeu creek till it joins the Kaipara River, and thence on to the Awaroa creek at Kaipara; the size of this land is three chains wide even from the point at which it commences at Kumeu, near Pitoitoi to Awaroa creek. This land is delineated and colored blue on this Deed, and for valuable consideration do hereby dedicate the said land to the public, to the intent that the same may for ever hereafter be used as and be a public highway, a canal, and a railway or tramway, to all intents and purposes whatsoever.
In testimony whereof we have hereto set our hands, this twenty second day of January, in the year 1866, in the presence of John White, Esq., Land Purchase Commissioner.
