Superintendent’s Office,
Auckland, 25th May, 1864.

THE following communication, which has been received from the Manager of the New Zealand Steam Navigation Company, on the subject of the delay expected to take place in commencing the Steam service from Auckland northwards, is published for general information.

Robert Graham,
Superintendent.

New Zealand Steam Navigation Company (Limited),
Auckland, 13th May, 1864.

SIR,—Referring to the conversation I had the honor of having with you this morning regarding the time the steamer for the northern service from Auckland would reach here, and commence the service, and in accordance with your wish, I now beg to state in writing the reasons that have caused the delay which has already taken place, and which will yet ensue before the contract can be properly begun.

When W. B. Rhodes, Esq., and myself were in Auckland in the early part of April, and entered into the above arrangement with you, both Captain Rhodes and myself were acting in the hope that the boiler which was being made for the s.s. ‘Storm Bird,’ would soon afterwards, or even at that time, have arrived at Wellington for her. Besides, we were both living in the hope that the ‘Wellington’—the Company’s new steamer from Scotland—would have reached New Zealand about the same time. I regret to state that the boiler from Sydney will not be received until the middle of June, and that it will take about six weeks to have it put into the vessel, and before other repairs can be effected so as to enable her to commence and to continue to perform the proposed service in a satisfactory manner.

The Directors have also suffered a severe disappointment in the delay which has arisen in the arrival of the ‘Wellington.’ Had this steamer been on the coast, it would in all probability have permitted the Directors to send the ‘Wonga Wonga’ or ‘Rangatira’ to run until such time as the ‘Storm Bird’ was ready. I fear therefore, under present circumstances, it will be quite impossible to have the ‘Storm Bird’ in Auckland before the middle or end of July. Regretting exceedingly the delay thus caused, and trusting it may not produce inconvenience to your Honor or the public generally,

I have, &c.,
R. J. Duncan,
Manager.

His Honor
The Superintendent of Auckland.
