PROVINCE OF WESTLAND GAZETTE.
Fields Act, 1866, except the powers conferred by Sections twenty-two, forty, forty-eight, sixty, ninety-six, and one hundred and seven of the said Act, to have, hold, and exercise the said powers hereby delegated to me within the Province of Westland; and whereas, by a Proclamation dated the 11th day of July, one thousand eight hundred and seventy-four, and published in the Provincial Gazette, No. 24, of the 15th July, one thousand eight hundred and seventy-four, I, James Alexander Bonar, Superintendent of the Province of Westland, in exercise of the powers vested in me did grant to William Whitten protection for a Ferry over the Teremakau; and whereas it is expedient to revoke the same: Now, therefore, I, James Alexander Bonar, Superintendent of the Province of Westland, in exercise of the powers in that behalf vested in and delegated to me, do hereby revoke the aforesaid Proclamation, and do further proclaim and declare that I have appointed the undermen-tioned persons to be Toll Collectors at the Ferry set opposite their names on the terms as stated below, and subject to the conditions as published in the Provincial Gazette, No. 13, of the 29th April, one thousand eight hundred and seventy-four, and do hereby authorise the collection of the undermentioned tolls at the above-named Ferry.

Double the above charges may be made between the hours of ten o’clock p.m. and six o’clock a.m.

The Government to have the right to revise the scale of tolls yearly.

Persons and vehicles carrying Her Majesty’s mails, and Government officers on duty, free.

Should the Government think fit to construct a bridge across the Teremakau during the term of protection, the sum of Two Hundred and Fifty Pounds sterling to be paid to the Lessees by the Government, on the payment of which the punt and plant shall become the property of the Government.

The punt, gear, and approaches, to be maintained in good and serviceable condition, to the satisfaction of the Provincial Engineer, and a safe and serviceable boat to be attached to the punt at all times.

All timber within the limits of half a mile on either side of the punt, and within one chain from the river’s edge to be left standing.

A light to be kept burning at each side of the ferry from sunset to sunrise.

The Lessees’ house to be placed as near the river as possible, having due regard to safety from floods.

If the river is at any time fordable, the Lessees must give every assistance, if required to do so, in pointing out the fords to persons crossing, and in such cases the Lessees will be entitled to charge according to the above scale of tolls.

The Lessees to be at all times in attendance at the ferry in person; but should circumstances necessitate their temporary absence, competent persons to be provided to take charge of the ferry during such absence.

Seven days in each year to be allowed to the Lessees for necessary repairs to the punt, and before the punt is withdrawn for this purpose, permission in writing must be obtained from the Government, and proper and sufficient boats must be provided for keeping the ferry open for traffic during such repairs.

Protection may be cancelled should the ferry be neglected.
