It is hereby notified in accordance with the provisions of Section forty-three of "The Westland Waste Lands Act, 1870," that the powers hereby delegated to the said Conrad Hoos within the County of Westland:

Now therefore, I, Conrad Hoos, Chairman of the County Council of Westland, in exercise of the powers in that behalf delegated unto me, do hereby grant unto Alex. Montgomery, protection for one year for a ferry from the Westland side of the Grey River to the Rocky Island, also for a road from Rocky Island to the Coal Pits, and I do hereby further authorise the collection of the undermentioned tolls. The protection to date from the 24th December, 1870.

Given under my hand at Hokitika this tenth day of January, one thousand eight hundred and seventy-one.

Situate in the Grey District, West of and adjoining the Arnold River. Bounded on the Northward by the Southern boundary of coal reserve No. 274 (in red), on the Eastward by the Arnold River, on the Southward by a line bearing 270° magnetic and one mile South of the Arnold Township and on the Westward by a line generally parallel to and one mile West of the Arnold River.

Exclusive of township and all necessary reserves, and subject to goldworkings.

Sir—I herewith deposit the sum of twenty pounds (£20), as required by the Water Rights Race Regulations, and I agree if my application, the particulars of which are hereunder set forth, be investigated, that such sum shall in all respects be held subject to the terms of such regulations, and that upon the approval of this application I will execute a lease upon the basis therein stated if the Governor’s Delegate shall think fit to grant the same.
