SCHEDULE D.
Water Guage.
A stream of water to be guaged by a box twelve feet long, ten inches deep, and twenty inches wide, all measured in the clear. The upper or entrance end of box may be left entirely open, but the lower or exit end shall be fitted with a bar two inches high affixed to the floor of the box, and with a pressure or head board six inches deep affixed to the top of the box, leaving an aperture of two inches in depth, and the full width of the box.
The guage box shall at all times be placed on a level.
The velocity of the water above the guage box shall, if required, be lessened by the construction of a dam bank, or by levelling the race for a distance of thirty feet, and such velocity shall not exceed an average of one foot per second in the said thirty feet to be guaged by a float. The surface of the water in race at the entrance to guage box shall be maintained at the level of the top of the guage box.
METHOD OF GUAGING.
This box will give a discharge of about 66 cubic feet of water per minute. If more than one sluice head of water requires to be measured, the guage box should be increased in width twenty inches for each additional head, all the other dimensions remaining as before. When this cannot be done, owing to natural obstacles or other sufficient reason, the guage box may be enlarged perpendicularly as follows.
FOR ONE HEAD.
Pressure board 20" x 6"
aperture 20" x 2"
bottom bar 20" x 2"
FOR THREE HEADS.
Pressure board 20" x 3 3/4"
aperture 20" x 6"
bottom bar 20" x 2"
FOR FIVE HEADS.
Pressure board 20" x 1 1/2"
aperture 20" x 10"
bottom bar 20" x 2"
FOR TWO HEADS.
Pressure board 20" x 4 7/8"
aperture 20" x 4"
bottom bar 20" x 2"
FOR FOUR HEADS.
Pressure board 20" x 2 3/4"
aperture 20" x 8"
bottom bar 20" x 2"
FOR SIX HEADS.
Pressure board 20" x 1"
aperture 20" x 12"
bottom bar 20" x 2"
The depth of the pressure or head board is to be reduced one and one-eighth inches, the aperture increased in height two inches, and the height of the guage box consequently increased seven-eighths of an inch, for each additional head of water that is perpendicularly measured, the height of the bottom bar and width of the box remaining constant throughout.
