It is hereby notified for general information that on Friday, the 26th day of February, 1869, the County Council was declared by the Chairman to stand prorogued until the second day of July, 1869.

THE following “Conditions under which Ferries may be Leased from the County Council” have been made by the Council, and are published for general information.

CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH FERRIES MAY BE LEASED FROM THE COUNTY COUNCIL.
I. When the term of lease is longer than one year, the scale of tolls to be newly adjusted by the Council each year.
II. All approaches from tracks or roads to the place of ferry, on either side of the stream or lagoon, to be kept by the lessee in thorough repair.
III. The ferry boats to be kept in thorough repair, to the satisfaction of the Harbour Master.
IV. When machinery or other apparatus is necessary to enable the ferry to be efficiently worked, the plans of such machinery or apparatus must be deposited with, and approved by, the County Engineer; and all such ferries must, during the term of such lease, be maintained in thoroughly good order, to the satisfaction of the County Engineer.
V. A lamp, containing a bright light, must be exhibited in the front of every ferry house from sunset to sunrise.
VI. The lessee must convey passengers across the stream or lagoon at any hour when called upon to do so; but double fares may be charged between the hours of ten o’clock p.m. and six o’clock a.m., except in case of floods, or at times when the stream or lagoon is otherwise dangerous to cross.
VII. The lessee to be sworn in, and act as a constable.
VIII. The lessee shall afford every assistance in his power in directing strangers to a safe fording across the river.
IX. Copies of the authorised scale of tolls to be painted in large letters on two boards; one of which shall be exhibited in a prominent place on either side of the stream or lagoon.
X. When any of the above conditions are not complied with, the Government reserve the right of cancelling the lease.
