To the Directors and Shareholders of the "Morning Star Gold Mining Company," Registered.
GENTLEMEN—I have the honour to submit to you a Report and Balance Sheet, ending the 15th July, and trust you will find the same satisfactory.
The Mine has now been opened 13 months, but the actual workings have not exceeded seven, as during that period operations were suspended for six months—caused mainly by the bursting of Jones’s Creek into the flat, and flooding the claims, and partly by the breaking of the engine-shaft. Nine weeks were spent in pumping out the water, which, with the extra expense incurred by the breakage of the machinery, caused an outlay of £700. The area of ground that has been worked is 7,255 square yards, or 1¼ acres, yielding a total of 2,841 ounces of gold; thus showing the average yield to be 15 ozs. 15 dwts. daily.
The portion of the Mine above the shaft is worked out on the present level, and 900 feet of main drives have been put in on the lower side, enabling nine faces to be worked, some of which have commenced blocking out; and on the arrival of extra trucks—shortly expected from Victoria—more faces will be opened.
The Machinery is in excellent working order; the recent alterations in the pumping gear, and the delivery of the water at 40 feet lower level, have been a decided improvement, as the pump now throws nearly twice the quantity.
